The doctor is in: You get to this age and no matter how healthy you are you start seeing doctors -- podiatrist, rheumatologist, dermatologist, optometrist.
Up and at 'em: In addition to getting up every day and breathing I try to walk two miles in the morning. Up until five years ago I was jogging, but my knees went out and I walk. Walking does not get faster as the years go by. I also do stretching exercises, some sit-ups and 25 push-ups.
Smoke-free: I smoked for 30 or 35 years, and I stopped for good when I was maybe 50. Every time I stopped I noticed a difference. Immediately, the appetite increases, the food tastes better and you can smell every smoker who walks by.
Hot dog! My wife, Bobbye Wayne, and I met in the personals in 1994. We married in '97 on my 80th birthday. She's basically a vegetarian. I eat a fairly decent diet, chicken and fish, and I haven't eaten red meat in a long time. I went behind my back and ate a kosher hot dog (no fries) a few weeks ago. It was good.
No sneakers: Bobbye and I volunteer at entertainment venues, usually ushering at local theaters and film festivals. In return, we get to see the shows. The downside is I have to dress a little -- black pants, white shirt, sometimes a jacket and tie. Sneakers and jeans are more comfortable.
On the air: In the past few years I worked part time as a telephone solicitor or marketing manager for local companies. Prior to that, I was in commercial real estate, working for brokerage firms. I also do occasional modeling for commercials. I was an extra in In Her Shoes with Cameron Diaz. I'm one of the chess players.
Castling: Six of my grandchildren live in Kendall. I play chess with them. One beats me on occasion. I taught them backgammon, Michigan rummy, gin rummy and, oh hell, a card game similar to bridge. That was Bill Clinton's favorite game. You can pick it up online.
