South Beach gym plans triple play

IMPACT: Impact is touted as ''the evolution of shadow boxing'' but it seemed pretty familiar. Instructor Marcello Ehrhardt structures his program into three rounds: upper-body techniques and drills, combination punches and roundhouse martial arts-styled kicks and, finally, an anaerobic punching and kicking barrage against a free-standing bag. The latter, juiced by energetic music, is meant to get the heart rate soaring. It's all fun, a sure-bet calorie burner and a must-have skill but, again, a feeling of been-there, done-that.

This week, instead of looking back at a class and grading it, we're going to depart a bit from the column's regular format and look ahead to three new class offerings coming to South Beach's Equinox in mid-April: Yoga 360, which utilizes a round yoga mat because, well, they say it's better; Impact shadow kickboxing and -- snicker -- Climb-Max, a stepping class taken on a slanted riser.
The three classes were conducted round-robin, about 20 minutes apiece, starting with Impact, then Climb-Max and, wisely, Yoga 360 to close. The end result: plenty of sweat, an accelerated heart rate and a feeling of satisfaction for having completed all three with some measure of decorum.
The, er, climax of this recent mini class marathon or Whitman's Sampler came at the end of Yoga 360: our eyes closed, lying flat on our backs, soothing New Age music, and the instructor calmly urging his students to think of those that give us ''unconditional love.'' Our dogs and cats, natch.
Sweet relief. I know now why my Spooky spends 95 percent of his life in nearly the same comfy position.
