Why do so few dare ride a bicycle in Miami though it's perfectly flat and warm year-round? It's the traffic, stupid: fear of getting crushed by two tons of speeding metal, the clueless motorists, the near-total lack of bike lanes.

Before I tell you about the new Polar FT40 training computer, I admit fitness gadgets usually don't turn me on. I once tried a strapless, heart-rate monitor. You had to place your thumb on the watch sensor for 30 seconds to see how fast your heart was pounding. That's darn near impossible when you're running at a decent clip.

It's difficult to think of a way to add pounds faster than living the stereotypical college lifestyle. Juggling coursework, jobs and a social life leaves little time for exercise or even regular meals. Late-night study sessions are often fueled by the nearest 24-hour greasy spoon. Getting too little sleep can also trick the body into craving more food.

In 2006 I noticed I had slowly gained weight. I had stopped going to the gym, then my husband got sick and the stress was more than I ever verbalized. My weight crept up to 206. I tried to get my life back on track last October, but in January I was at 203 pounds.

Eileen Friedman, 46 Plantation MS diagnosis: I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2000 after a head-on accident that totalled my car. I probably had MS 12 years prior because the symptoms came and went like a toothache. The pain in my head was intense, but I thought it was related to the accident. My brother has MS, so I went to see his neurologist.
