A fun optical illusion, The Matter (C), made of foam, concrete and paint is on display at Life's a Gas exhibit through July 26 at Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin.

Titled Life's a Gas after the lyrics of a 1960s folk-rock song by the band T-Rex, Martin Oppel's solo exhibition of sculpture and paintings at Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin continues the Miami artist's exploration of the rampant construction in the city juxtaposed against the beauty of the natural landscape. Born in Argentina in 1976, Oppel craftily opines on precarious building practices in pieces like the sculpture above, a fun optical illusion, The Matter ©, made of foam, concrete and paint. It's a stark contrast to his oil on canvas, Light Flora, which captures the luminous way light falls in South Florida among its palm fronds.

Life's a Gas runs through July 26 at Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, 194 NW 30th St., Miami; 305-573-2130; open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday; closed July 4; www.galerieperrotin.com.
