Democrats launch online ballot-application tool

The Associated Press

Democrats are launching a new tool they say will allow Michigan voters to apply online for absentee ballots in communities across the state.

Michigan Democratic Party Chairman Lon Johnson and Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz made the announcement Thursday about the MIAbsentee.com site.

It's part of an ongoing effort by Democrats to boost November turnout among party members who vote in presidential elections but not off-year races. Johnson has estimated that nearly 1 million Democrats failed to vote in 2010 when Republicans took control of state government.

A message seeking comment was left with a spokeswoman for Secretary of State Ruth Johnson.

Michigan voters casting an absentee ballot must be 60 or older, out of town when the polls are open or meet other criteria.
