Maria Shriver’s boyfriend not so new; Nick Cannon’s book; Jenny McCarthy’s wedding dress nothing like Angelina Jolie’s

Maria’s man

Maria Shriver has a boyfriend. But he’s not necessarily new to the picture. The journalist brought political consultant Matthew Dowd to her cousin Bobby Kennedy Jr.’s wedding to Cheryl Hines last month. While the event was one of the couple’s first public outings, the New York Post reports that Shriver started her relationship with Dowd in 2006, five years before news went down of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s dalliance with the housekeeper that resulted in a child. How the two met: Dowd was a chief strategist for Schwarzenegger’s gubernatorial reelection campaign and worked in George W. Bush’s administration.

Side job

Nick Cannon has been keeping a notebook for much of his life, and next year we’ll get to see some of the entries. But sadly, nothing about his rocky marriage to pop diva Mariah Carey.

The entertainer and record producer is working on a book of poems for children.

Scholastic announced that Cannon’s Neon Aliens Ate My Homework and Other Poems will be published in March 2015. According to the publisher, Neon Aliens will feature black-and-white illustrations from several street artists and reflect Cannon’s desire to combine poetry and hip-hop. Cannon said in a statement issued through Scholastic that he has been writing poems and stories since he was 8.

Cannon also has a children’s book scheduled for October, Roc and Roe’s Twelve Days of Christmas, inspired by the twins he had with Carey. The couple is reportedly estranged.

Starting a family

Country star Carrie Underwood and NHL player Mike Fisher chose the Labor Day holiday to announce they are expecting their first child.

Underwood and Fisher posted the announcement on their social media accounts Monday. Underwood’s publicist confirmed the couple are expecting their first child in the spring.

The 31-year-old Underwood shot to fame after winning American Idol. She has won six Grammys and sold more than 15 million albums worldwide, and was the first woman to twice win the Academy of Country Music’s entertainer of the year award. She will co-host the Country Music Association Awards with Brad Paisley in November.

Fisher, a 34-year-old center for the Nashville Predators, is recovering from a ruptured left Achilles tendon and is expected to miss the start of the season.

Mr. & Mrs.

And the bride wore white. Jenny McCarthy and Donnie Wahlberg got hitched Sunday in Chicago. Donnie’s famous brother Mark Wahlberg couldn’t make the ceremony — it was his daughter’s birthday — so he took to Twitter to congratulate the two. McCarthy was married once before to director John Asher ( Diamonds, Dirty Love); the Blue Bloods star’s ex-wife is recording engineer Kim Fey. McCarthy’s dress was on the conventional side, unlike Angelina Jolie’s. Her very un-bland Atelier Versace gown featured her kids’ drawings, as seen on the cover of People.

Hold the phone

It’s official. She is not amused.

The U.S. ambassador to Britain has told Tatler magazine that Queen Elizabeth II finds the obsession with mobile phone images a bit disconcerting. The monarch expressed her dismay to Matthew Barzun, who spoke with her when presenting his credentials as America’s representative.

The magazine quoted Barzun as saying “she was essentially saying, ‘I miss eye contact.’

Some members of the royal family have posed for selfies with the public. The queen’s most famous brush with cellphone images was at the Commonwealth Games this summer, when she accidentally photobombed — popped up smiling in the background — a selfie taken by an Australian athlete.
