St. Thomas University has a new provost — and it’s a familar face in local academic circles.

Irma Becerra-Fernandez, who previously held a vice president position at Florida International University, will become the new provost at St. Thomas, located in Miami Gardens.

Becerra-Fernandez worked a number of academic and senior management positions at FIU, and her educational background spans the fields of engineering, information technology and business.

Prior to working in education, Becerra-Fernandez was an engineer at Florida Power and Light. In a statement, FIU president Mark Rosenberg said St. Thomas “is gaining a star” in hiring Becerra-Fernandez.

At FIU, Becerra-Fernandez worked as a vice president for the university’s Office of Engagement. She coordinated various community partnerships, including the “One Community One Goal” Academic Leaders Council.
