Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Philadelphia Phillies president and CEO David Montgomery is taking a medical leave of absence while he continues to recover from jaw cancer surgery, the team announced Thursday.

Montgomery, who has management authority over the team as a general partner, underwent surgery on May 19.

Former Phillies general manager Pat Gillick, who has been acting as a senior advisor to current GM Ruben Amaro Jr., will assume Montgomery's duties.

Gillick said in a statement he is "glad to be of assistance" in Montgomery's absence and looks forward to him returning.
