Royals claim Jayson Nix off waivers

Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - The Kansas City Royals claimed infielder Jayson Nix off waivers Thursday among a slew of roster moves.

Nix was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Monday after batting .111 in 16 games for them. The seven-year veteran played 18 games for Philadelphia earlier this season before he was granted free agency.

Also on Thursday, the Royals activated pitcher Scott Downs from the 15-day disabled list, where he landed Aug. 12 with a stiff neck.

The Royals recalled pitcher Michael Mariot from Triple-A Omaha and placed him on the 60-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain and optioned pitcher Liam Hendricks to Double-A Northwest Arkansas.
