A South Miami-Dade woman was startled awake early Monday by her son straddling her in bed. When she screamed, he stabbed her, police said.

Yolanda Ferguson, 38, is recovering from stab wounds to the face, neck and upper torso at Kendall Regional Medical Center. Her son, U’Laun Jamar Volthire, 19, was arrested and charged with attempted murder.

According to Miami-Dade police, Ferguson was lying in bed at her home in the 10700 block of Southwest 224th Terrace about 1:30 a.m. Monday when Volthire climbed on top of her, holding a knife.

As Ferguson screamed, her daughter Amanda Pierre ran to the room, where she saw Volthire on top of her mom with the knife. When Pierre yelled for him to stop, she said he responded: “She’s not going to die, stupid.”

Pierre called police, Volthire ran out of the house and tried to take his mother’s car. When that failed, he ran away. Police found him on the Busway along U.S. 1 by Southwest 112th Street, where they arrested him.
