Sandy, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Real Salt Lake scored twice in the span of four second-half minutes on Saturday to come away with a big 2-1 victory over West rivals Seattle Sounders FC at Rio Tinto Stadium.
Joao Plata opened the scoring for the hosts in the 57th minute with his team- leading 11th goal of the season and an own goal off the foot of Seattle midfielder Osvaldo Alonso three minutes later gave the hosts a two-goal margin.
Seattle pulled one back 18 minutes from time through Chad Barrett, but it wasn't enough as Real Salt Lake earned all three points to jump over Seattle for the top spot in the West with an impressive 42 points.
After a scoreless first half, RSL struck first just prior to the hour mark when Plata eluded his mark and got to the back post to head home a free kick from Luke Mulholland.
The hosts doubled their advantage three minutes later when Mulholland raced to a through ball in the area and locked horns with Alonso. The two battled for the ball and the final touch went off Alonso and past Stefan Frei for the own goal.
The Sounders pulled one back in the 72nd minute as Clint Dempsey was stopped by Nick Rimando from point blank range. Andy Rose then headed one off the right post, but Barrett was there to smash it home from close range to make things interesting down the stretch.
Seattle heaped pressure on the RSL net in the final moments, but an equalizer never came and RSL snuck away with all three points.
The defeat drops Seattle into second place in the West with 41 points from 22 matches played.
