New FSU defensive coordinator gets big raise

Miami Herald Writer

Charles Kelly has a new salary to go with his new job title.

Kelly, named Florida State defensive coordinator during the offseason, has received a new three-year contract worth $500,000 per year according to documents released Tuesday by FSU.

In his second year at Florida State, Kelly will receive a base salary of $206,000 per year. He earned $275,000 as the Seminoles’ linebackers coach in 2013.

The contract runs through Jan. 31, 2017.

Kelly is expected to run a defensive scheme like the one employed by Jeremy Pruitt last year. Pruitt guided the Seminoles to top-five rankings in total defense and passing defense before leaving for Georgia in January.

“Nothing’s changing too much as far as our defense and our scheme and the way we call things,” junior linebacker Terrance Smith said in March. “So it’s been a pretty smooth transition overall.”

The raise comes as part of an allowance in head coach Jimbo Fisher’s contract. Fisher’s deal, signed in January, included a $500,000 boost to FSU’s salary pool for assistant coaches.
