FIU football coach Ron Turner, players decline to address media after first fall practice

FIU opened preseason practice Monday morning with a 2 1/2-hour session. The Panthers will practice again at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday.

The team practiced in helmet and shorts. During the 30-minute period open to the media, junior quarterback E.J. Hilliard took snaps with the first team, as expected.

When the Panthers went out of a three-wide-receiver set, sophomore tight end Jonnu Smith — last year’s leading receiver — was put in the slot with redshirt senior Cory White at tight end. Junior Lamarq Caldwell was still the first-team running back.

After practice, FIU declared all players off limits to the media. Coach Ron Turner declined to speak to the Miami Herald on the record.
