Union acquire Algerian GK Mbolhi

The Sports Network

Chester, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Union announced on Wednesday that the club has acquired Algerian international goalkeeper Rais Mbolhi from Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia.

Mbolhi starred for Algeria at the 2014 World Cup as he helped lead the team to its first appearance in the knockout round at the tournament, where the Desert Foxes lost 2-1 to eventual champions Germany in extra time despite 11 saves from Mbolhi in the game.

That performance earned the 28-year-old Man of the Match honors and raised his profile on the world stage.

A citizen of both Algeria and France, Mbolhi earned playing time on the French U-17 and U-18 national teams before making his full debut for Algeria in 2010.

Mbolhi began his club career in France with Marseille and went on to spend time in Greece and Japan before arriving in Bulgaria with Slavia Sofia in 2009.

After a loan move to CSKA Sofia in 2010, Mbolhi also made appearances for Krylia Sovetov in Russia and Gazelec Ajaccio in Corsica before he returned to CSKA in 2013.

To make room on the roster for Mbolhi, the Union waived goalkeeper Brian Holt.
