Old Gamecocks home to be used for practice

The Associated Press

The former home of South Carolina basketball will be reworked this summer into a practice facility that will be used by the men's and women's basketball team.

The school said this week the renovations at the Carolina Coliseum should be finished by October 1st in time for fall basketball practices. The layout will have two courts side-by-side.

Gamecock men's and women's basketball played their home games at the Carolina Coliseum from November 1968 until Colonial Life Arena was opened in 2002. The coliseum is home to classrooms and has hosted graduations for local high schools.

South Carolina said it will remove about 3,000 chairs from arena seating to facilitate the new two-court layout.

The current practice facility next to the coliseum will be used for volleyball practice and matches.
