Miami Dolphins 9-year-old fan dies of brain cancer

Dillon Brooks, the cancer-stricken South Florida boy who was all but adopted by Dolphins players and coaches last fall, died Saturday. He was 9.

Dillon passed “peacefully and comfortably,” said father Drew Brooks -- a Pembroke Pines police officer who has been part of the Dolphins organization for more than a decade. The younger Brooks, who was autistic, suffered from a highly aggressive malignant brain tumor, which his family tried to beat with revolutionary brain surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.

During Dillon’s fight, Dolphins players, coaches and staff regularly visited the family’s home and the hospital, and helped raise money for his expensive treatment.

“He smiled to the end,” Drew Brooks said. “Always happy, regardless of the battle.”

Dillon’s memorial service will be held at the Church By The Glades, 400 Lakeview Drive in Coral Springs, at 7 p.m. Thursday. The family asks those who wish to make a donation do so to the Church By The Glades, in memory of Dillon Brooks.
