Search dog foundation gets $500,000 grant

The Associated Press

A Southern California organization that trains dogs for search-and-rescue teams has received a $500,000 grant from a Florida-based foundation.

The Ventura County Star reports (http://bit.ly/1zBIbZT ) that the gift to the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation comes from the Scaife Family Foundation, which gives money to animal welfare programs and other causes.

The group's new facility, on 125 acres of ranch land near Santa Paula, includes kennels, a veterinary office, classrooms and an indoor training center that can replicate extreme weather.

The organization was created by retired schoolteacher Wilma Melville after she went to Oklahoma City following the 1995 bombing of a federal building there. Dogs were used in the search for survivors.

The center has since trained 150 teams that have been sent to more than 100 disasters.
