Three Miami Police Department boats are out of service after someone stole the lower units from the vessels outboard engines over the weekend.
Police spokeswoman Frederica Burden said Sunday that without the the parts valued at a total of $18,000 the boats are grounded.
We are trying to figure out who did this and why, Burden said.
The boats, which are stored at the Miami Yacht Club, were last seen intact about 4 p.m. Friday, Burden said. When marine patrol units arrived Sunday, they noticed the parts were missing.
Burden said that all police equipment is etched with a serial number and the letters MPD.
Whoever did this didnt think it through, she said.
Without the lower unit, which keeps the propeller in place, the boat cannot run, Burden said.
Police hope that nearby surveillance cameras captured video of the theft.
Its sad because now we are down three boats, and that affects everyone, she said.
Police asked anyone with information to call Miami-Dade CrimeStoppers at 305-471-8477 or the Miami Police Department at 305-603-6030.
