Miami Lakes to rebuild Optimist clubhouse

Construction is slated to begin this month on a new $1.8 million Optimist Park clubhouse in Miami Lakes.

The state-of-the-art clubhouse will replace the original, which was left unrepairable by Hurricane Wilma in 2005.

Plans for the 5,000-square-foot multipurpose facility include many necessary improvements from the 37-year-old clubhouse demolished last September.

“The clubhouse will be a modern building, providing much needed additional indoor multipurpose recreational space and a concession area,” said Tony Lopez, director of community and leisure services. “Also, it will provide needed additional parking for the park.”

The facility will also include a Miami Lakes Sports Hall of Fame to celebrate local professional athletes. This addition was proposed by Vice Mayor Manny Cid and funded through a private donation.

Town officials anticipate the clubhouse will be completed by summer 2015.

“This our first step into the planned future of the park,” Lopez said.
