Delbonis wins Stuttgart opener

Stuttgart, Germany (SportsNetwork.com) - Eighth-seeded Federico Delbonis was one of three opening-round winners Monday at the Mercedes Cup tennis event.

Delbonis vanquished former top-10 fellow Argentine and 2012 Stuttgart runner- up Juan Monaco 6-4, 6-1 on the red clay at Tennis Club Weissenhof.

Also on Day 1, Argentina's Leonardo Mayer overcame German wild card Michael Berrer 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) and Kazakhstan's Andrey Golubev dismissed another German wild card, Philipp Petzschner, 6-4, 6-1.

The top seeds in Stuttgart are reigning champion Fabio Fognini and Russian Mikhail Youzhny, both of whom received byes into the second round. The Italian Fognini will open up against Golubev, while the 2002 titlist Youzhny will take on Mayer in the round of 16.

Fognini defeated German Philipp Kohlschreiber in last year's finale.

The 2014 Stuttgart champion will earn $105,000.
