Miami-Dade children who lost lives to random violence remembered

After a week in which three people were killed and seven were injured by gunfire in Liberty City, more than 150 people gathered Tuesday in a Liberty City park to honor Sherdavia Jenkins and other Miami-Dade County children who have been killed by random violence.

The event, called “Children to be Remembered,” has been held at Sherdavia Jenkins Peace Park every year on the anniversary of the date that Jenkins was caught in the crossfire of a gunfight between two men.

Jenkins was 9 at the time of the shooting, which happened on July 1, 2006 at a Liberty City housing project.

Jenkins was playing with a doll near the porch of her house. The shooters were 50 yards away.

Both defendants were convicted; Damon Darling was sentenced to 50 years, and Leroy Larose to seven years.

Among the speakers at Tuesday’s observation was Gene Tinnie, a local artist, author and activist. Tinnie spoke of the need to reduce violence everywhere.

A list was read with names of 108 children who were homicide victims in Miami-Dade County during Jenkins’ life. White balloons were released to remember them.
