Motorcyclist killed trying to enter closed I-595 express lanes

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the death of a motorcyclist who crashed when he tried to enter the closed express lanes on Interstate 595 in Broward County as he exited from Florida’s Turnpike.

Jahanan Palumbo, 41, of Miami was headed north on the turnpike, then exited to I-595 shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday. He apparently tried to enter the express lanes, which had red lights and the “Do Not Enter” gates in the down position.

According to FHP, Palumbo’s Kawasaki motorcycle hit two of the gates, careened across the northbound turnpike lanes and struck a portable arrow sign on the opposite side of the road.

Palumbo’s body hit the guardrail and landed on a grassy shoulder.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash remained still under investigation Monday.

FHP said the accident also caused about $1,500 in damage to a tractor-trailer parked on the side of the road.
