Montreal, QC ( - The Montreal Canadiens and defenseman Andrei Markov have agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension.

In 81 games with the Canadiens last season, Markov had seven goals and 36 assists. The veteran defenseman added one goal and nine assists in 17 playoffs contests.

"We are very happy to have secured a long term agreement with Andrei," said Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin. "He is an important part of our group of core players. He is healthy, shows a very good work ethic and has great leadership skills. He plays big minutes against the top opponents, and game- changing defensemen of his caliber are hard to find."

Originally selected by the Canadiens in the sixth round of the 1998 NHL Draft, Markov has 98 goals and 344 assists in 765 career contests with Montreal. He also has four goals and 25 assists in 71 playoff games.
