Keys beats Kerber to claim first WTA title

Eastbourne, England (SportsNetwork.com) - American Madison Keys claimed the first WTA title of her career with a three-set victory over fifth-seeded German Angelique Kerber in Saturday's final at the Aegon International.

Playing in her first-ever final, Keys fired 17 aces past Kerber in a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory at Devonshire Park. The American claimed victory on her fourth match point.

The 19-year-old Keys became the youngest American to win a singles title since October 2006 when Vani King (17 years, 254 days) won at Bangkok. She pocketed $120,000 with the victory.

Kerber, 26, fell to 3-8 in her career finals, including a 0-3 record in title matches this season. She last titled in Linz, Austria, last year.

Kerber entered Saturday's match with a 2-0 mark against Keys.

With Coco Vandeweghe capturing the Topshelf Open this week, it's the first time two Americans have won WTA titles in the same week since February 2002, when Venus Williams and Monica Seles won in Antwerp and Doha, respectively.
