Den Bosch, The Netherlands (SportsNetwork.com) - Surprising American qualifier Coco Vandeweghe upset rising Spaniard Garbine Muguruza to secure a berth in the semifinals at the Topshelf Open, a final grass-court Wimbledon tune-up.

The 22-year-old New York City native Vandeweghe took out the seventh-seeded Muguruza 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 in Thursday's quarterfinal action at Autotron Rosmalen. Muguruza shocked Serena Williams in the second round at the French Open a few weeks ago.

Vandeweghe's semifinal opponent on Friday will be eighth-seeded Czech Klara Koukalova, who got past Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova 6-2, 6-4 on Day 5.

The other semi will pit Slovak Magdalena Rybarikova against Chinese Zheng Jie. Rybarikova defeated German Annika Beck 6-2, 7-5, while Zheng zipped past Ukrainian Elina Svitolina 6-3, 6-0.

This week's champion will earn $47,000.
