Doral’s parks department has envisioned another lush park for the northern section of the city.

The conceptual plan for Doral North Park, to be built on 25 acres at Northwest 74th Street and 97th Avenue, includes a lake, fishing pier, picnic shelters, wetland boardwalk, tennis courts, basketball courts and a 6,000-square-foot community center.

The City Council unanimously approved the plan Wednesday.

“It’s an amazing concept,” said council member Sandra Ruiz.

The parks department expects the entire project to cost between $8 million and $10 million.

Parks and recreation director Barbara Hernandez said the park will have an educational component unlike other parks in Doral or Northwest Miami-Dade. A 2,400-square-foot nature center with educational exhibits is another part of the plan.

“The students, kids, anyone can come in [to learn] about the native species, the plants, the trees, the birds,” she said. “So it’s a different type of recreational facility.”

She said it is too early to have a time line for the park’s completion, but the company currently clearing the land has already obtained permits for the site as part of its agreement with city, so construction could begin soon. “We hope that maybe sometime during next year we can break ground,” she said.

The City Council approved the conceptual plan Wednesday, and now the city staff will solicit proposals from developers for construction management.

Doral North is one of two planned parks in the north side of the city. Construction of an 18-acre park on Northwest 114th Avenue between 80th and 82nd streets is expected to start in December.
