Miami Beach to explore hotel behind Jackie Gleason Theater

A new hotel for the Miami Beach Convention Center may go up behind the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater.

Commissioners on Wednesday recommended city staff further explore that site as a possible location for the hotel.

Staff had presented the commission with three other options: where City Hall now sits, the 17th Street Garage near Lincoln Road, or the parking lot in front of the convention center.

Miami Beach is moving toward a $500 million renovation of the publically-owned convention center. Industry experts say the city needs to build a hotel close to the convention center to make the space more convenient and affordable for conventioneers and meeting planners.

Next, the city will study how to structure a deal — which is likely to include ground leases of public property — to build the hotel.
