Halle, Germany (SportsNetwork.com) - Fourth seed Kei Nishikori needed three sets to win his second-round match Wednesday at the grass-court Gerry Weber Open, a Wimbledon tune-up.

The Japanese world No. 12 star outlasted former top-10 performer Gael Monfils, of France, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, at Gerry Weber Stadium.

Also in the round of 16, Colombian Alejandro Falla dropped Dutchman Robin Haase 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 and German favorite Philipp Kohlschreiber dismissed Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-2, 6-4.

In some more second-round action on Thursday, top-seeded superstars Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will take to the courts. Fresh off his ninth French Open title, the world No. 1 Nadal will meet German Dustin Brown, while the former top-ranked great and six-time Halle titlist Federer will take on Portuguese Joao Sousa.

Federer beat Russian Mikhail Youzhny in last year's Gerry Weber finale.
