Padres pick Manziel in 28th round of MLB Draft

San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Diego Padres selected 2012 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel in the 28th round of Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft on Saturday.

Just under a month after being selected 22nd overall in the NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns, Manziel, listed as a shortstop, was scooped up by the Padres with the 837th overall selection during the third and final day of the draft.

The former Texas A&M quarterback took home college football's most outstanding player award during his first season with the Aggies in 2012, becoming the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy.

Manziel joined a select group of Heisman Trophy-winners to be chosen in the MLB Draft, but he's far from the first quarterback, as Super Bowl-winners Tom Brady and Russell Wilson were both selected in the June draft.

Manziel is no stranger to San Diego's Petco Park, having taken batting practice there prior to throwing out a football-style first pitch -- which featured a fake handoff and a bootleg -- back on May 17, 2013.
