Bjorn, Sterne withdraw from U.S. Open

Pinehurst, NC ( - Thomas Bjorn and Richard Sterne both withdrew from the U.S. Open Championship on Wednesday due to injuries.

Bjorn has been battling neck and shoulder injuries. The Dane had played the last two U.S. Opens at Pinehurst. He missed the cut in 1999 and tied for 52nd in 2005. Including this year's Open, Bjorn did not play six times and missed the cut twice in the last eight U.S. Open Championships.

The two-time British Open runner-up was replaced in the field by amateur Andrew Dorn, who was the first alternate from the Springfield, Ohio sectional qualifying site. Dorn will be playing his first U.S. Open.

Sterne is rehabbing an undisclosed injury and won't be healthy enough to play at Pinehurst. He has played the U.S. Open once in 2008 and missed the cut.

The South African was replaced in the field by Scott Langley, who was the first alternate from the Memphis, Tennessee qualifier. Langley, the 2010 NCAA Individual champion, has played three U.S. Opens and has made the cut each time.

The U.S. Open kicks off June 12th. England's Justin Rose will defend his title at Pinehurst No. 2.
