A veteran Miami-Dade police officer on his way home from his shift shot a suspect on the highway Sunday night.
The officer, whom Miami-Dade police declined to identify Monday, shot and wounded the man during a traffic stop at Interstate 75 near Miami Gardens Drive.
“He observed two vehicles traveling northbound on I-75 at a high rate of speed,” police spokesman Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said.
The officer pulled over one car, got out of his car and signaled for the other to stop. The driver of that car, a BMW, pulled into the emergency lane and slowed down at first, according to police. He then “drove towards the officer, causing the officer to discharge his firearm,” Zabaleta said.
The suspect, identified as Joshua Lamarq Frazier, 23, was hit in the torso. He was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center. Charges against him are pending. The driver of the first car to be pulled over was not charged.
The officer, a 26-year veteran who is assigned to the airport district, was not injured.
