Chris Brown released from L.A. jail, still has community labor

Chris Brown got a break.

The singer was released early Monday from a Los Angeles County jail. Brown had been in custody since mid-March, when he was arrested after being expelled from a court-ordered rehab sentence for violating its rules. And a judge last month ordered the R&B singer to remain in jail after he admitted he violated his probation by getting into an altercation outside a hotel in Washington, D.C., last year.

Brown had been ordered to serve a year in county jail but was given credit for almost eight months. The credits include time that the singer has spent in rehab and jail, as well as credits for good behavior while behind bars. Brown will have to complete the remainder of his 1,000 hours of community labor.

Funny business

There is more to David Spade than the catchphrase “Buh-Bye.” The actor and comedian is working on an untitled memoir scheduled to come out in fall 2015. According to Dey Street Books, an imprint of HarperCollins publishers, Spade will write about everything from his childhood in Arizona to his friendship with the late comedian Chris Farley. He will even, apparently, relate what he calls his “epic tale” of losing his virginity. In a statement, Spade offers a self-review for his book: It’s a “must” buy and a “maybe” read.

Call to duty

The northern New Jersey town that experienced traffic jams when approach lanes leading to the George Washington Bridge were closed has called in the cavalry. Fort Lee named F Troop actor Larry Storch mayor for a day on Sunday. The 91-year-old Manhattan resident vowed to mount his horse and charge to the bridge if anyone messes with the lanes, The Record reports. Storch said he forged a special relationship with Fort Lee because he performed at a nightclub there that was open from 1931 to 1954.

Radio daze

It never ends with this saga. A spokesman for Casey Kasem’s daughter says the ailing radio personality has been taken to a medical facility in Washington state because he is reportedly suffering from bedsores and lung and bladder infections. NBC News reports that the radio legend’s wife Jean Kasem flung raw burger meat at his daughter Kerri Kasem and videotaped her putting Casey into the ambulance. “In the name of King David, I threw a piece of raw meat into the street in exchange for my husband to the wild rabid dogs,” Jean told NBC News.

My bad

Justin Bieber is apologizing after a years-old video surfaced showing the then-teenager telling a racist joke with the N-word. In a statement Sunday to The Associated Press, Bieber said when he was a kid he didn’t realize how certain words could hurt. The British tabloid The Sun first published the 5-year-old video; in it, Bieber tells a joke about black people that has the racial epithet as the punchline. Before he says it, someone warns him not to — but he says it anyway amid laughter.

Try, try again

On Tuesday’s season finale episode of Giuliana and Bill, the couple’s doctor reveals their recent pregnancy try is unsuccessful because their surrogate had a miscarriage, E! star Bill Rancic confirmed to People. “She was about nine weeks pregnant. We were pretty close to getting into the safe zone,” says Rancic. Their son Duke was born via the same surrogate, Delphine, in August 2012. He says the woman is “on board” to give it another go.

Hotel dust-up

Ray J had no comment via Twitter after his arrest at the bar at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel hotel Friday evening; his latest post promoted his website. A statement from the Beverly Hills Police Department says officers were investigating a report that the 33-year-old singer had inappropriately touched a woman’s behind at the tony property’s watering hole. The contact was found incidental, and the Bad Girls All-Star Battle host agreed to leave. For unknown reasons before heading out, he became unruly. After being taken into custody, Kim Kardashian’s ex reportedly used his feet to shatter a patrol car window.

Bridal mode

Three years after a devastating run-in with a helicopter propellor, Lauren Scruggs is planning her wedding to E! News anchor/South Florida native Jason Kennedy, the model-fashion blogger said on Monday’s Today show. “I walk in and my apartment is full of tulips, this little like path to the patio,” recounted the Dallas resident, who lost her left eye and hand in the accident. “He was outside in the grass, and there were just candles, spelling out. ‘Will you marry me?’ I was just seriously shocked.”
