As the chief of mission of the Consulate General of the Republic of Haiti in Miami, I have read with great surprise the letter to the editor by Emmanuel Roy in response to Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe’s May 13 Other Views column, Politics of the past holding Haiti back.
First, Roy never served as an adviser to President Michel Martelly.
Second, it should be noted that Roy wrote his letter from a federal penitentiary in Spokane, Wash., where he is serving an 87-month sentence. In addition to his conviction for mortgage fraud, Roy has been disbarred in Florida and in New York.
As Prime Minister Lamothe noted in his article, we are attempting to move Haiti in the right direction.
We are especially seeking to rid Haiti of the type of behavior that has landed Roy in a U.S. federal prison.
