Giants' Cain set for another DL stint

The Sports Network

St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain has been scratched from his scheduled start on Saturday due to a right hamstring injury and will be placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Cain was forced to exit his May 21 start against the Colorado Rockies in the third inning after sustaining the injury. The three-time All-Star was held out of his scheduled start Monday, but was expected to avoid his second DL stint of the season.

However, the Giants made the decision Friday to disable Cain, who landed on the DL back in late April after cutting his finger on a kitchen knife while making a sandwich for a pregame snack.

Yusmeiro Petit will start Saturday against St. Louis in place of Cain. Petit made three starts during Cain's first DL stint and also drew Monday's assignment against the Chicago Cubs after Cain was scratched.

The 29-year-old Petit has gone 3-2 with a 5.08 earned run average over 14 games, including four starts, for the Giants this season.

Outfielder Juan Perez will be recalled from Triple-A Fresno Saturday to take Cain's spot on the 25-man roster.
