Saints' Byrd undergoes back surgery

The Sports Network

Metairie, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - New Orleans Saints safety Jairus Byrd, who inked a six-year contract with the team this offseason, had minor surgery Thursday to relieve a disc issue in his back.

Byrd, a five-year vet who had spent his entire career with the Buffalo Bills, had a minor procedure that "didn't need to be done," according to Saints head coach Sean Payton. Both Byrd and the team agreed that the best option was to get the problem cleared up.

"He'll start up with training camp with no problem," said Payton following the team's first OTA session that was open to the media.

Byrd, who has 356 tackles, 22 interceptions and three Pro Bowl appearances so far in his career, is expected to return to the team next week.
