British singer and drummer Phil Collins made a surprise appearance at Miami Country Day School last week.

Collins, who rose to fame in the 1970s as a member of rock band Genesis, shared the stage with the school’s middle school band at a spring music concert.

He told the crowd that he was a bit nervous before launching into hit songs In the Air Tonight and Land of Confusion.

Collins’ ex-wife, Orianne Collins Mejjati, who lives in Miami-Dade, said he performed because his son asked him to. Collins has two sons who attend the pre-K-12 school in Miami Shores.

Collins declined to be interviewed but said in an emailed statement that he had a great time working with the students and found them talented and enthusiastic. It was his first time performing publicly in several years.

The school did not return several calls.
