History is a wonderful teacher. Remember when Bruce Matheson and his allies fought so hard to prevent turning a blighted landfill into what has become a world-class tennis event, bringing thousands of visitors and tens of millions of dollars to our city?
Now we have selfish Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines fighting a soccer stadium in an unusable portion of the seaport, so they can have the land for their own devices. And, we have certain self-appointed environmental watchdogs fighting against the slip area to preserve a water view used now by no one.
Here’s my suggestion: The port and slip opponents should either put up the funds to guarantee development of what they want now or get out of the way and let a beautiful plan for our city, which includes park space and water access, as well as commercial development, come to fruition.
