Weather it out with Sam Champion, who leads hurricane rally Friday

Ready or not, here it comes: Hurricane season.

While we haven’t been walloped seriously since Wilma made landfall in 2005, The Weather Channel’s Sam Champion wants to make sure we don’t get rusty about preparation.

The America’s Morning Headquarters star will visit South Bayfront Park, 301 N. Biscayne Blvd., in downtown Miami from 7-10 a.m. Friday for a special Hurricane Prep Rally. His Weather Channel colleague, former WFOR-TV meteorologist Bryan Norcross, will join in. The show airs lives on the cable network.

Champion, ex-weather anchor for Good Morning America, lives in Miami Beach on the weekends with husband, Brazilian artist Rubem Robierb, and weekdays in Atlanta. So he doesn’t want to get his house destroyed, either.

Cool-dad award

Well, this got the PTA over at Miami Country Day School percolating.

Against all odds, Phil Collins did a set for parents and kids (see it on YouTube). Last Wednesday’s gig, which included a song Collins rarely does in public, In the Air Tonight, had to gain some brownie points for his two sons Nicholas, 13, and Matthew, 9, who go to the school. We would be interested to see what would happen if one of these kids got an F. Maybe a reunion of Genesis?

“Thank you for having me,” said the reclusive performer, whose ex wife Orianne Collins Mejjati has a jewelry store in the Design District. “This is a lovely school. And all the kids have been very polite.”

Collins even gave a shout-out to MCD’s music teacher Charles Winters and the Middle School Orchestra, who provided able backup.

A call to the school about the stellar appearance went unreturned.

In December, when Collins was here celebrating Nicholas’ birthday and launching his Little Dreams Foundation in South Florida, the Switzerland resident told the Miami Herald that he was looking to plunk down stakes here.

Second chance

No Euro flash a la Kimye here. Patrick Swayze’s widow Lisa Niemi married jeweler Albert DePrisco before 50 guests at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach (and where Donald wed Melania Knauss in 2005). “How often does lighting strike twice? Albert, & I just married today,” Niemi, 58, tweeted. “An incredible, wonderful, joyous day for both of us.” Niemi, a former dancer, was wed to Patrick Swayze for 34 years until his death of pancreatic cancer in 2009.

Terminado

We saw it coming from a mile away, but yes, it’s indeed over between Sofia Vergara and erstwhile politician wannabe Nick Loeb, the actress-entrepreneur announced on her WhoSay account. The Modern Family actress broke up with the part-time Delray Beach resident who now dedicates himself to his other love, Onion Crunch, a fried food topping.

The New York Daily News reports one big reason for the split was Vergara was tired of Loeb trying to ride on her sexy coattails. A source told the paper he even tried to get a small role in her new movie with Reese Witherspoon, Don’t Mess With Texas, but failed. Loeb didn’t look too triste Monday night, chatting up a brunette at a club in the Hamptons, the paper adds.

Homeward bound

Tattoo-happy Broward firefighter Carl King was sent packing by Bachelorette Andi Dorfman on Monday night’s episode. Apparently, there was no, um, spark. King tweeted that he got cut but still “doesn’t know why.” Maybe we’ll find out in the After the Rose ceremony.
