As I reflect on the voices of my father, a POW in Manila; my uncles, all World War II veterans; and my own as I volunteered Vietnam while in the military, the cause was the same: Duty for our country, families and all inhabitants.
I had another purpose and that was to understand our role and to be able to communicate my feelings after my military service. My prayers are each day for veterans and their families. Not only do service members pass on in war zones, there are veterans who pass on at home.
I learned from Vietnam that the memory of others keeps the light glowing from within. We must all work toward building peace through communication. However loud that may be, it is the way to know that wars are in the past.
