City gives away laptops to college-bound students

Miami Gardens Mayor Oliver Gilbert gave away 20 laptop computers to selected college-bound seniors Monday night at Miami Carol City Senior High School.

The mayor said the students were chosen to receive the assistance by counselors and teachers at the school, 3301 Miami Gardens Dr., Miami Gardens.

The program was funded almost entirely through donations and contributions, and partially by the city. Contributors included the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and the United Automobile Insurance Co. Gilbert said he hopes the program will grow so that more students can benefit next year.

“I try to raise year round for it because the number of laptops is driven by the money that’s available,” Gilbert said.

The next giveaway will take place at 8 a.m. Wednesday at Miami Northwestern Senior High School, 1100 NW 71st St., Miami.
