Kerber into Nuremberg QFs

Nuremberg, Germany (SportsNetwork.com) - Top-seeded German crowd favorite Angelique Kerber secured a berth in the quarterfinals at the Nurnberger Cup tennis event, a final clay court French Open tune-up.

The left-handed top-10 star took care of wild card and fellow German Anna-Lena Friedsam 6-2, 7-6 (7-0) on Day 4.

Kerber's quarterfinal opponent will be Czech Karolina Pliskova.

Other second-round results saw fourth-seeded Elina Svitolina erase Spanish qualifier Beatriz Garcia Vidagany 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, seventh-seeded Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia edge out German Dinah Pfizenmaier 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 and Mona Barthel upend eighth-seeded fellow German Annika Beck 6-2, 6-4.

The other quarters will pit second-seeded Canadian Eugenie Bouchard against Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova, Svitolina versus Barthel and Garcia against Italian Karin Knapp.
