The May 14 article Judge: Drug test rule is unconstitutional, about the court’s view that the Key West policy violates the Fourth Amendment, particularly the part forbidding unreasonable searches.
The government should consider a policy requiring job applicants for city positions to be drug tested a reasonable search. These are the people that help run the municipality. They should not be under the influence of drugs, considering the important decisions they make that affect so many people.
It is reasonable to test anyone applying for a city job. The employers are not going around testing everyone, but rather the people who come to them and want to hold a position in the city. It is not a violation of rights; it is more like a precaution. Suspicious looking or not, all employers should be able to test every applicant applying for a city position.
