Sex offender pleads guilty to 1987 Miami-Dade rape

A convicted Miami sex offender pleaded guilty Monday to another rape – this time, a vicious early morning attack that took place in July 1987.

A DNA match linked Vernon Cook, 48, to the attack of a woman who was choked and raped behind a gas station along the 8000 block of Northwest Seventh Avenue. The woman, in her 30s, had been walking down the street when she was suddenly attacked.

Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Ellen Sue Venzer sentenced Cooke to 20 years in prison, to be followed by ten years of probation.

Miami-Dade sexual battery detectives arrested Cooke in 2012 as part of an effort to re-examine cold cases. His DNA was on file because he had served more than a decade in Florida prison for a rape that happened in 1990.
