Giants' Belt to DL, Cain returns

Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Francisco Giants placed first baseman Brandon Belt on the 15-day disabled list Saturday, less than 24 hours after he fractured his left thumb in a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The move clears a roster spot for pitcher Matt Cain, who will make his first start since April 23 in Saturday's matchup with Los Angeles.

Belt suffered the injury when he was hit on the hand by a pitch from the Dodgers' Paul Maholm in the second inning of Friday's 3-1 San Francisco victory. He remained in the contest to run the bases, but was then removed in favor of Joaquin Arias in the bottom of the inning.

So far this season, Belt is hitting .264 with nine homers and 18 RBI.

Cain missed 2 1/2 weeks with a laceration on his right index finger, which he sustained from a kitchen knife while making a sandwich prior to a scheduled start against San Diego on April 29.

The three-time All-Star is still in search of his first win of 2014, having gone 0-3 with a 4.35 earned run average over five outings prior to being shelved.

San Francisco also selected the contract of outfielder Tyler Colvin from Triple-A Fresno while optioning pitcher George Kontos to the Pacific Coast League affiliate.

Colvin, a .241 career hitter with 47 home runs over five seasons with the Chicago Cubs and Colorado, was batting .267 with two homers and 16 RBI with the Grizzlies.
