El Portal wants residents to help solve crimes by registering their Closed Circuit Televisions

Special to the Miami Herald

El Portal is reaching out to residents in an effort to help solve crimes.

The village has launched a new program asking residents to register their Closed Circuit Televisions, which could help pinpoint a criminal act, said manager Jason Walker.

“It has been useful in previous investigations,” he wrote in an e-mail. “Usually, the police have to canvass the area to see who has a CCTV system to help in the investigation. The database will allow us to immediately know which residence has CCTV and would be of assistance in any future investigation.”

Residents can register by e-mailing the department at with their name, phone number and address. Or they can stop by village hall at 500 NE 87th St.

“If the bad folks know that El Portal has an active CCTV crime watch, it could be a crime deterrent,” he wrote.

So far a few residents have signed up. The village will also publicize the new program in the El Portal newsletter. For more information call 305-795-7880.
