Speaking at the NRA convention on April 25, Florida’s Sen. Marco Rubio said: “The safety of our families is not something people should hope government can provide.” The senator is right in that “hope” is the wrong word. We expect and demand that government provide for the safety of our families. Safety is a chief reason for municipal incorporation in Miami-Dade County. South Miami residents and business owners can reasonably expect trained police officers to show up within two minutes of an urgent call for help.
Further, the data show that Rubio and the NRA are wrong to claim that household guns make our families safer. The most likely victim of the gun we buy to protect our family is a member of our own family. Peer-reviewed studies have shown that twice as many Americans are shot and killed during family arguments as during robberies, and that suicides are 10 times more likely with a gun in the home. We expect and demand that all of our elected leaders, Rubio included, hew to the best science on public safety, violence prevention, sea-level rise and all matters affecting our health, safety and security.
