Dillard tops Piper in flag football quarterfinals

Jimmy McDonnell’s two-run single in the first inning staked the South Broward baseball team to a 2-0 lead and the Bulldogs added three unearned runs in the pivotal third inning as the Bulldogs (10-12) stunned perennial state power Nova 6-4 in the District 15-7A semifinals, ending the Titans’ season at 19-4.


Maryann Skubal and Jenna Tolzmann, St. Thomas Aquinas, girls’ lacrosse: Skubal and Tolzmann each scored three goal to lead the Raiders over Miami Palmer Trinity 14-1 in a second round state play-in game.

Daeshon Gordon, Northeast, girls’ track: The LSU recruit won the 100 hurdles in a personal-best 13.46 (U.S. No. 2), the 300 hurdles and anchored the Hurricanes' third-place 1,600 meter relay team as the Hurricanes finished third at the Region 4-4A championship, its highest finish.

Jim Reddish, West Broward, boys’ volleyball: Reddish had 13 kills and seven blocks in a five-set victory over Piper.

Brooke Hale, Monarch, softball: Hale went 4 for 4 with three runs as the Knights (21-4) beat West Boca 14-5 for its first regional quarterfinal victory.

Permron Burrows, Coral Springs Christian, baseball: Burrowws went 2 for 3 with a triple and four RBI to lead the Crusaders (20-7) over Westminster Academy for the District 14-3A title.

Eric Goldenberg and Gal Ben Kiki, St. Thomas Aquinas, boys’ water polo: Goldenberg and Ben Kiki each scored three goals apiece to lead the Raiders (23-3) over Winter Park 14-4 in the state semifinals.

Krystal Sparling, St. Thomas Aquinas, girls track: Sparling won the 100 meters (11.34) and 200 (23.34) in nation-leading times and anchored the winning 400 meter relay team in 45.50 (U.S. No. 1)as the reigning Class 4 state champions won the Region 4-4A title.

Jessica Abramson, Pompano Beach, softball: Abramson threw a complete game, allowing no earned runs, in a 4-3 victory over Bayside in the Class 5A regional quarterfinals.

Andrew James, Westminster Academy, boys’ track: James won the 100 meters, 200, 400 and anchored the winning 1,600 meter relay team as the Lions won the Region 4-1A title.

Andres Schmidt, Cypress Bay, boys’ water polo: Schmidt scored nine goals but Winter Park rallied for a 11-10 victory in the state quarterfinals.

Javon Patterson and Phillip Lee, Boyd Anderson, boys’ track: Patterson won the 800 meters and Lee won the high jump at the Region 4-3A championships.

Koral LaStella, Westminster Academym, girls’ water polo: LaStella had two goals but the Lions (9-6) fell 8-4 to Winter Park in the state quarterfinals.

Andre Ewers, Piper, boys’ track: Ewers won the 100 in a personal-best 10.31 (U.S. No. 2) and the 200 in a personal-best 21.09 (U.S. No. 4) at the Region 4-4A championships.

Jensen Strandberg, Westminster Academy, softball: Strandberg went 3 for 4 with a RBI to lead the Lions (17-3) over Lake Worth Christian 3-2 in the Class 3A regional quarterfinals.

Dylan Lagamo, St. Thomas Aquinas, boys lacrosse: Lagamo had five goals to lead the Raiders (14-5) over Miami Columbus 17-4 in a second round state play-in game.

Brandon Mosley, Dillard, boys’ track: Mosley won the 200 meters in a personal-best 21.68 and anchored the winning 400-meter relay team (41.75) at the Region 4-3A championships.

Mariano Pennini, Taravella, boys’ volleyball: Pennini had 20 kills and five points to lead the Trojans (14-1) over Cypress Bay in three sets.

Kendall Ellis, St. Thomas Aquinas, girls’ track: The three-time 400-meter state champion clocked a personal-best and U.S. leading 53.09 at that distance and anchored the winning 1,600 meter relay team to 3:39.68 (U.S. No. 2) at the Region 4-4A championships.

Jake Jacobs, Pines Charter, baseball: Jacobs had an RBI and scored two runs to lead the Jaguars over Boynton Beach 3-0 in the District 14-6A championship game.


Tatyana Voltirie rushed 101 yards to score a touchdown for the 14-7 Piper victory in the District 23 quarterfinals over Dillard on Monday afternoon.

Linda Gomez had 12 flag pulls and Alexandra Raldiris had a touchdown reception.

The Bengals (8-3) will take on Boyd Anderson at 5 p.m, Wednesday.

• District 28 quarterfinals—Piper 14, Dillard 7: Tatyana Voltirie rushed 101 yd, TD, TD pass. Linda Gomez 12 flag pulls. Alexandra Raldiris TD reception. PIP 8-3.

• District 28 quarterfinals—Fort Lauderdale 13, Northeast 6: Ashley Buchanan 2 TD passes, 160 YD rushed. FL 8-5.

• District 32 Semifinal— Mater Academy 19, Somerset 0: Alondra Angulo 3 TD Passes. Emily Acosta 2 TD Receptions. Solamy Galvez 2 Interceptions. MA 11-1.


American Heritage defeated Cooper City, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22, in the District 10 semifinals.

Greg Holodak led the Patriots with 18 kills, five blocks, four assists, nine digs, eight points and an ace. Tyler Gordon had 19 kills, nine points, three assists and 14 digs. Dave Dulay registered four kills, ten points and four aces. Eric Rice added three kills, seven points and 33 assists.

The Patriots now advance to a 7-3 record.

• District 10 Semifinals—Archbishop McCarthy d. Cypress Bay (25-12, 25-15, 25-10): Luis Sanchez 22 points, 6 aces, 9 digs. Michael Moreiras 14 points, 12 kills. Christian Amortegui 6 kills. AM 13-6.
