Brown advances; Davydenko exits Munich

Munich, Germany (SportsNetwork.com) - German wild card Dustin Brown was among Monday's winners, while one-time world No. 3 and two-time champion Nikolay Davydenko was sent packing at the $590,000 BMW Open, a clay court French Open tune-up.

The 6-foot-5 Brown snuck past 6-foot-10 Croat Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5), while Argentine Federico Delbonis drove out the Russian Davydenko 6-2, 7-6 (7-4). Brown is rewarded with a second-round match against top seed Fabio Fognini of Italy.

Davydenko titled here in 2004 and 2011.

Also on Day 1, Aussie Marinko Matosevic overcame injured Pole Michal Przysiezny 2-6, 6-5, retired, and Colombian Alejandro Falla whipped Finnish veteran Jarkko Nieminen 6-2, 6-1. Przysiezny retired due to a right ankle problem. Falla's second-round opponent will be long-time German favorite and reigning champion Tommy Haas.

Haas beat then-reigning and two-time overall titlist Philipp Kohlschreiber in last year's all-German BMW final.

This week's third seed is Russian Mikhail Youzhny, who captured this event in 2010 and was the runner-up in 2007 and 2009.

This week's champion will earn $107,000.
