4-year-old on scooter killed by truck backing out of driveway

A 4-year-old boy riding a scooter was hit and killed by a truck backing out of a Dania Beach driveway Saturday afternoon.

The child was attending a birthday party in the 4700 block of Southwest 33rd Avenue.

Few details had emerged by late Saturday other than the boy being taken to Memorial Regional Hospital, where he died of head wounds.

Broward Sheriff’s deputies said the incident happened about 2 p.m., that the driver was cooperating with law enforcement, and that no charges had been filed.

“Obviously, when you’re pulling out of your driveway, that’s one of the most dangerous spots. Whether it’s your driveway or one that leads immediately into a street, you really need to watch out,” BSO spokeswoman Gina Carter told WFOR Channel 4.
