Miami Beach warns residents of traffic delays by Critical Mass cyclists

Miami Beach police warned motorists and homeowners about the likelihood of "complete gridlock" Friday night, as thousands of bicyclists make their way through Little Havana, Liberty City, and onto Miami Beach.

Critical Mass, a monthly flashmob-like event that occurs once a month, is expected to attract as many as 4,000 bicyclists to the beach, and police are so concerned they're warning residents about the "non-sponsored" event.

"The event is a bike ride that involves a large amount of riders that overtake the lanes of traffic. There is no event organizer to reach out to and in the past they have severely affected the traffic and caused hours of delays," said Miami Beach police Capt. Enrique Doce.

The anonymous Critical Mass website said the ride will begin at 7:15 p.m. at Government Center, then continue through East Little Havana, Overtown, Allapattah, Liberty City, Little Haiti, the Upper East Side, North Bay Village, North Beach and Miami Beach - a roughly 20 mile trail.
